How a Stranger in an Elevator Saved My First Episode

A year ago, I walked out of my very first recording at Gotham Production Studios in Manhattan completely defeated. I stumbled. I stuttered. I had to start over more times than I want to admit. Telling my own story, the one about leaving TV news, was harder than I ever expected.

Then I got on the elevator, and Dana Brewington turned to me and asked, "How'd it go?" That question cracked something open. We became friends that day. She was my Angel in the Elevator and I still call her "Godwink Dana" to this day.

Dana was my very first guest on Unscripted Turbulence, and now she's back to kick off Year Two. She was in news too, a former producer for Gayle King at CBS, before she left and built her own podcast, Minds of Renewal, centered on her relationship with God. I call it a God Pod.

In this episode, Dana flips the script and interviews me. We talk religion, spirituality, and the power of prayer, including a recent story that's still giving me chills. We check in on how far we've both come in a year.

Well, I mean, on unscripted turbulence territory, but yeah, Dana was my first interview ever on unscripted turbulence. I was honored. And now we are doing a one year later interview. I think it's a really great timestamp. And I we were talking about this late, well, earlier about it being kind of a yearly thing. So that would be neat every year. Let's see how it works.

CBS News back in the day. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So I worked at some other places as well, but I was at CBS for the longest time.

Yeah. And she was Gail King's producer. Yes. Yes. And she helped me produce this podcast episode. Because we were on the phone yesterday and she's like, Well, what do you want to talk about? I want to make it exciting. And I said, Well, I'm sure it will be exciting because we're going to be, you know, kind of reminiscing a little bit about how far we've come in a year.

Yeah, I don't want to be prepped. I want to be surprised. So exactly. Okay. So we will start with how you said how we know each other.

Yeah. We should just in case anybody didn't see the first episode. Yeah. We might want to recap that we met in an elevator in this building right here.

Yes, yes, yes. So um to recap, it was the beginning of this podcast. It was my first time ever in this studio here that we're sitting in. And if you're watching, you see it. If you hear it, you're hearing me in the studio, obviously. And I was nervous. I thought that I had it all together. And when you're in TV, you always have that earpiece in your ear when you're talent or on air. And I just couldn't get anything out. I was stumbling left and right. And I thought I was going to be much better than I was. I had to heavily edit it at the end of the three-part series I did because I would repeat something, then I'd think, oh, it's in in TV land, we call it an as live where you pretend you're live, but you're really not. And that's just kind of in the weeds terms for for TV news. But um, when you're an as live, you're you're recording it, pretending you're live, because maybe there's a scheduling conflict as to why you cannot be live. Right. It's just a whole thing. Right. So I I was terrible at as lives. I can't do them. To date, I can't do them. Now, this is not really an as live because it's, you know, whatever, but so anyway, so I'm I'm tripping up, all that kind of stuff. I get done with this, and I go to the elevator, and and I'm and I'm waiting for the elevator. In the meantime, you want to see where you were at this point?

I had also filmed in this studio. I was filming Minds of Renewal, left my glasses in here. You know, one of the things about me is I'm liable to forget something anywhere. So I left my glasses in here, had to come back, had to wait because you were recording. Yes, I was. She was recording, and I said, Ah, okay. I said, I'm gonna go just hang out across the street. I'll come back and get my glasses. When I came back, I saw you waiting for the elevator.

Your head was kind of down. You look like you were deep in thought. And um those who know me know that I'm a Christian, a believer in Jesus. We'll talk about that, I'm sure. We talked about it in the first episode. But I say that to say I felt um the Lord prompt me to speak to you. It's just like speak to her.

Yeah, because at that time when I got in the elevator with Dana Brewington, I saw her come in and I talked to everybody. And I thought, I can't do it. I I I don't have the bandwidth right now. I just I'm so upset. I don't and it wasn't an upset of like, why did I leave TV news? No. It was more of an upset of I didn't perform to what I know I could perform as. Yes. So I just sat there quietly, stood there quiet. I wasn't like sitting. Can you imagine I like sit in the corner of the elevator? Oh man.

Right. Right. No. But I asked, you know, how did it go? How was your taping? And you were very honest. Like, you know, I just don't know. And we started talking about TV. You said that you came from TV news. I said, me too.

And that was like an immediate like, okay, I'm in the presence of somebody who gets it. Yeah. And it was when you're with another TV person, you guys, I mean, I don't know if this has ever happened to you, but you could be in a complete disagreement about something or or have a different view on something, or but once you find out they're on TV, you're like, Oh, I understand your life.

Especially TV news in such a specific world. Yes. So we knew that we were from the same world, and that was an automatic connection. You told me about unscripted turbulence that you were getting ready to launch this thing. And like I said, one year later, I am so proud of you. It's been so fun to watch how you went from unsure to just crushing it. Thank you. You're crushing it. It's really, really hard. You're doing an amazing job.

You know, when you realize how far you come on some project that you decide to set out to do. It's big.

It's a it's not a small thing.

No, it's not. And it's a lot of work.

I don't know if people realize how much goes into making a podcast. It's a lot of work.

It's not like you sit in front of a camera with a microphone. Like you have to think about your angle, your niche, or whatever you're gonna talk about. And then you have to think about the title, the description of the title, how are you gonna release it? Because that depends upon like, you know, people are gonna expect you to release it a certain day. What are your topics? Right. Line up the interviews. And you have to, it's in TV terms, it's HFR, hold for release. So you have to grab all these interviews, interview a lot of people, and then you have them in the can. Yes. All you have to do is edit then release. Yes. In what order are you gonna release them? Why are you gonna release them? How are you gonna tease them? It is oh in the editing.

It's a lot.

There's multi- you're doing multiple jobs as one person most of the time.

Especially when you start out. Because there are some people who have the means to have a whole production studio. Right.

SPEAKER_02 8:29

But if you're just starting out, you're probably doing everything yourself. And it's it's a lot of work. So it's no small thing what you've accomplished. I'm proud of you.

Well, thank you. I appreciate that. So after we got off the elevator, we of course started talking in the side on the sidewalk for a good half hour, if not more, and realized, you know, when we parted ways, uh, you were telling me that you, well, before we parted ways, that you have your own podcast, Minds of Renewal. Yes. I like to call it a God Pod.

So do you want to explain what the Minds of Renewal is?

SPEAKER_02 9:03

Yeah. So Minds of Renewal is a podcast and a platform. I hope to do other things under Minds of Renewal in the future. Um, but we're talking about renewing our minds as based on a Bible scripture, Romans 12, 1 and 2. Uh, verse 2 says, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. So there's this thought process and this journey spiritually where you realize that you've taken on patterns, cycles, there's a way of thinking that maybe a lot of people subscribe to. But then we have to wonder is this how God wants us to think? Is this how we were created to think? Is this what he really wants for our lives? So walking through that process of renewing our minds, changing our mindsets to align with God's word. Yeah. I love that. Yeah. Love that.

What do they do? A little clicking with your fingers.

And so when people come on the show, they're telling their testimonies, um, and special moments in their lives and sharing their stories, and then we talk about the Bible as well.

So Dana is obviously very spiritual, religious. Right. I am too, but in a different way. And we always think it's so interesting that we can have these conversations, and neither of us is turned off by one another in the conversation of religion.

Right.

And where we feel and how we feel. And I I How do you feel about the word religious?

SPEAKER_02 10:34

When you think of the word religious, what do you associate that with? Like, what's your first look somebody said in the beginning that I was gonna switch it on herself?

SPEAKER_01 10:43

I think of just religious, I I it kind of intimidates me. Like you're very much church, buttoned up. But like you're not you are not. But when I think of the word religious, I think, oh, you have to be on your best behavior.

SPEAKER_02 11:00

Yeah. I think that's a common association that people think. I think that people associate uh religion with law and rule and standard. And though that there is truth, right, there is a way that I believe that God wants us to live and expectations that He has for us, and He wants us to, you know, my belief as a Christian is God's goal is to make us more like Jesus, which is make us more loving, make us more compassionate, um even give us a greater understanding of suffering, which is hard. You know, it's a part of life, but I believe that's a part of that process of becoming like Jesus, right? But I only pause there because I say when when we say like Dana's really religious, I'm like, you know, that word might have a negative association. So I always like to say, Oh, I like that. As opposed to saying I'm religious, I like to say I have a strong relationship with God that I want to become even stronger. Ooh, yeah. So more relationship than religion.

I like that because that is true. I mean, we've had many, many conversations. We have had um, like you said, working lunches, and just recently we went out for lunch, which ended up being like a five-hour ordeal. We talked for so long. And Pilot was like, Are you coming home? I said, Yes, I'm coming home. I'm with Dana. We're hanging out. And he was like, Okay, well, if I have to eat alone, please let me know. I'm so sorry, Pilate. Why? Oh, no, no, he's fine. He's he's so today we're we're recording at four o'clock in the afternoon, and he had a wild trip last night. Weather, he was on the Van Wick, which is like his enemy, and it was rain, it was 20 miles an hour and all this other stuff. So he texted me and he was like, 4 p.m. is your interview? I said yes. Now he's now he's all been out of shape because he doesn't know if he's gonna get a meal too.

Oh my gosh. No, every time we hang out, I'm messing with pilot's schedule.

Yeah. If you do, I'm not gonna be upset about it. So now when Dane and I decided that we were gonna do this podcast together, that was last year. Yes. She has a very interesting story to this because we were going back and forth, and I didn't know who I wanted, you know. I had my first three episodes for my TV trilogy, I like to call. The leading up to the turbulence and TV, and then finally getting to ABC, realizing it's not where I want to be, and then leaving. So I had my whole entire arc of my career in TV in three episodes. And I knew that after that I wanted full-on interviews, and I thought, who do I want for my first interview? And then it was just like, oh my gosh, Dana. God wink Dana. She's the one. So I got on the phone, I asked you, and you said, sure, when you're trying to figure out a date. So now everyone knows I'm woo-woo, and you are you have a strong relationship with God. Is that the way you say it? Yes, okay. I'm learning. See, learning in real time on this podcast. While she is religious, but is more about having a strong relationship with God, that is how she's defined. You put it so I'm a work in progress.

And praise the Lord for that. But let's be clear, I'm a work in progress too. And anyone walking this earth is a work in progress. There's no one that is a completed, perfect, no such thing. I believe God's the only one that's perfect. We're just a continuous work in progress.

Trust. I don't see that. I mean, I see you as like, you know, this shining aura of hope, and you just are so empowering, and just I don't know, you make me always feel better and you make me think differently now. And we'll get to a situation that recently happened where I thought, Dana.

We love that. It was really we love god wink moments. It was a god wink. It was another godwink moment.

It was a god wink moment, but Dana was in that one. I'll tell you that much right now. So that's a tease right there. Oh, yeah, isn't it? You like that, producer? You like that? Yeah. Very good. I'm doing good so far. We love it. Okay. So let's talk about when we decided the date. Because you just shared with me this story. So we're going back and forth with dates. Was I the one that said dec it was uh July 31st? I believe so. Okay, so we decided July 31st of 2025 was when we sat down for our recorded interview, which to then was gonna be released August 20th. So this is being released, I believe I said what, the 12th of August.

So almost one year to the day. A year later. Okay. So and we're recording it today, which would be the 29th of July. Yes. Oh my gosh. It's almost like literally a year both the recording and the actual release.

So in sync. Okay. Yes. But as soon as you asked me, how about July 31st? I was like, God? That was a God wink for me because July 31st became a significant date for me one year prior in 2024. Okay. I I know this is gonna, like you said, it might sound strange to people, but you gotta understand when it comes to God and how God does things and how he speaks, sometimes it's strange to us. A lot of times it's beyond what we can understand. It doesn't always make sense to us in the moment. And let's be honest, it might even sound kind of crazy some of the ways that God speaks and moves. So rewind back to July of 2024. Um, I'm sitting on the couch with my friend. Uh her name is Whitney. Hi, Whitney. And my friend Val was there. We had gone to a conference together. She looks at me and she says, Did your womb just leak? And I know that's that might sound strange, but in the moment, in the spirit, I felt it, and I actually felt a flutter in my stomach. To be clear, um, I don't have any children, right? So um, you know what I mean? This was a complete, what do you mean, did your womb just like no? I wasn't pregnant in the natural, but I felt something in my stomach, and I looked at her and I said, Yes. Later that day, I said, Did you remember um asking me, did your womb just sleep? And she goes, No, I don't, I don't remember that. Praise the Lord, my friend Val was there to witness it. Because Val heard it and she went, Amen. She didn't even go, What are you guys talking about? Did your womb just sleep? So my friend Whitney didn't even remember it. I knew in my heart that God was speaking through her, um, which is not uncommon. It is something that God can do. He can literally speak through a person, he can give a message to and through a person to give to you. We see it all throughout the Bible.

So And sometimes people don't remember saying it.

And that's actually a very common thing where people won't even remember because guess what? It's not them talking, it's God. Wow. The Bible says that we're, you know, if we believe in Jesus, we're a temple for the Holy Spirit that lives in us. Our body is a temple, so he lives in us, he could speak through us, he can use us. Did my dad say that?

I believe my dad was an ultra boy when I was younger, and he always said, My body's my temple.

SPEAKER_02 18:47

It's true. And so I believe that God used me to deliver a message to you the day we met.

SPEAKER_01 18:55

You know, I believe that. I believe that. I completely believe that.

SPEAKER_02 18:58

There was something I said to you outside that I really felt was straight from him. You were talking about courage and the premise of this podcast. I felt that it was a word from him. I said it to you. I remember you looking at me and you just gave me a huge hug. Do you remember that? I do, I do, I do. And so that's a I bring that up to say this is not an anomaly or an uncommon thing for God to use a person to deliver a message because when you think about it, what are the ways God can deliver messages to us, right? He can, well, he's God, to first of all, so he could do whatever he wants. He could speak through a poem. He could speak through, you know, nature. He could speak to us in any different.

He did talk to God through a burning bush, so it's not even out of the question. I'm just kidding. I'm joking.

Right, I'm getting a little sweaty because now I'm getting nervous. Like, what's gonna be talking to me soon?

SPEAKER_02 19:56

I'm gonna move this plant bone here. It's like it looks like a bush. We're gonna move. So funny. That is so funny. I went a little bit around and about to say, God can speak to any ways. Like I said, I believe he used me to speak through you. In that moment, he delivered this message, did your womb just leap? to through my friend. And I immediately thought of um the book of Luke, the Gospel of Luke, where uh the Virgin Mary is pregnant with Jesus. She meets Elizabeth, who's her relative, who's pregnant with John the Baptist. And when she hears Mary's greeting, Elizabeth talks about the baby in her stomach, John the Baptist, leaping at the sound of Mary's greeting. And so we understand this in the Bible to be the baby in her womb recognizing the Messiah, Jesus. Wow, even in the womb. And Elizabeth talks about how her womb leapt when she heard the greeting. So when my friend said that, I immediately think of this very specific biblical reference. And um I later had a dream. A couple couple weeks, maybe a week later, had a dream that I was pregnant and I didn't know I was. And then I'm like, oh wow, like I'm pregnant, and oh, I didn't know. And then I'm at the hospital once again. This is a dream. Yeah. People are like, let's not pop this up. No, I know pregnancy. It's not an announcement. Okay, so that's hilarious. But in the dream, awesome.

God winked Dana is like the Virgin Mary. Glory be, amen.

No, this is a dream, just to be clear, okay? But anyway, I'm I'm pregnant in the dream. I didn't know I was pregnant. And then I go to the hospital and I'm with my friend Val, who is just someone who's always been very significant in my walk with God, and she's uh one of my closest friends. And the nurse or someone in the hospital looks At me and says, We're going to have to induce you July 31st. And I woke up. Right? So kind of always circled that date, um, July 31st. And each year, something interesting spiritually has been happening on that date. Even going back to last year, you asked me to tape that day.

Yes.

That first episode, your first guest episode where I was your guest, was the first time I had ever told my story.

SPEAKER_01 22:34

And what a story it is. You have to go back to the Godwink Dana initial, and I'll have it linked with this uh podcast because it is it's a story.

It's a story. And I had never shared my testimony till that moment. So even that felt like birthing a thing. And that all ever since that dream, I feel like I entered into a season of birthing things spiritually from minds of renewal uh to a prayer community called A1 Accord. Uh so yeah, he just started launching me into these spiritual assignments that needed to be birthed.

Yeah, and you know, I when I had that your podcast, the first one, I a lot of people loved it. Because you even said you weren't sure. You know, uh, you know, you're talking about religion, it could be, you know. Yes. And I said, no, I get it, but I'm I'm open to it. Cause I think I I just because either you believe or you don't believe, but Or you're not sure. Or you're not sure, but things things oddly happen in specific times where you question how did this happen? And that's where I always think it's very interesting. Um, but yeah, and having you on on on the podcast really just enlightened a lot of my people and still me to this day. Every every time I have a conversation with you, I I I leave lighter and brighter. I do. And I start thinking and seeing the world in a different way. Bushes won't be talking to me, even though I thought I heard a whisper over here. Let's be let's be clear. But you just never know.

Go all glory to God. I really do think believe that it's him. Genuinely. Well, even when you talk about a light, I believe that's that's all him.

So well, I mean, I I know, and you're not about me. Yeah, but you you're you're you're a vessel to to God over here.

But you know, when you came on, yeah. Well, when you came on, you were, you know, really opened up my eyes to like your podcast and like letting people know that you know you have this podcast and the prayer group, which you you didn't mention last year. Yeah, yeah. This is your moment to mention this prayer group that you have because there might be somebody listening that would like to have some of Godwink Dana in their life.

Amen. So you don't want God winked Dana. You want you want God in your life. Not me. I guess I'm not sure. I'm not you in my life, you're in my life. Amen. Amen. Um, yeah, so A1 Accord, interestingly enough, a month after that birth dream, the Lord gives me instructions to start this prayer call, which is something that my friends and I, shout out to my friend Whitney once again, who we had talked about it for years because her and I used to pray on a regular basis with another friend. Okay. And it was just such a beautiful time. We would just pray, we would talk about life, we would hear each other out, what we're going through, and it really helped us form this sense of community. So we always said, we gotta open this up, we gotta do this for more people.

And it started just with you and Whitney just in a like you meet up at a coffee shop.

No, it's actually on Zoom. It would be virtual. Okay. Yes, it's Zoom. We do it weekly. Uh, but yeah, we launched in September, also 2024, and it's been going ever since. And it started as a prayer call, and it genuinely evolved into this beautiful community where it's been so beautiful to see the relationships form, and people that don't know each other, people that live in different cities, because it's because it's Zoom, it's people across the country. Yeah. Um, we've even had people that are in in different countries join at times, and it's been beautiful. Amen. Amen. It's been beautiful. So shout out to A1 the A1 Accord family.

A one accord. So the A1 Accord is inspired by the book of Acts in the Bible.

So in the book of Acts, that was when the early church first formed.

Yes. Okay. And it was a very simple blueprint for a church, which was they gathered together in prayer. The Bible says, on one accord. The men and the women together would constantly gather for prayer on one accord. That's where the name comes from.

Oh, that's so beautiful.

Yes, and it was this very simple model. If you look at Acts 242, they studied together, they fellowshipped, meaning they just hung out and enjoyed each other's company. They broke bread, they grew in their faith together, and they prayed together. And it was a very, you know, it wasn't like you said, religion can sound intimidating. But when I read the book of Acts, it felt very organic, very much about community and growing in faith together because I believe that and the Bible says God doesn't want us to be alone.

He didn't design us to be alone. We're made for community and to help each other.

Okay. Yes. All right. So uh speaking of prayer, um, I I had an a situation happen the other day.

Oh my gosh, you have to tell this story.

I know. You asked me on the phone, you want to tell it? I was like, I think I should. So when I was working at Fox Five New York, I met this amazing guy named Shaka. Shaka is from Zimbabwe originally. And he at that point in his life was, I don't know what you would call like the leader of the salvation army in Harlem. Okay. There's like a name for I don't, not a general, but he's like the guy in charge. So at that time, I think it was before the pandemic, um, something happened where his Salvation Army vans that were parked in a parking lot in Harlem were set on fire. Some arson or something.

So that was my assignment that morning. I went up, I covered it, I met Chaka. Chaka is a hoot. Chaka and I started connecting, and I was telling him that I at that time I had a stick shift Mazda 3. RIP the Red Mazda. I got you. I did get to ride in it. Yeah, you did. Yes. Now you have to ride in the new ride, which is great. But the Red Mazda was a six-speed. I drove it. I think I ended with 194,145 miles. I mean, it was like an extension of me, 16 years. So I was telling Chaka this and he was like, oh, and he was so impressed that I drove a stick shift in New York City. That is impressive. It is, right? Yeah. Until he shows me pictures of him in the wildlands of Africa with lions. And I go, You're impressed with me driving a stick shift. He goes, Yes, yes, but I, but you know, like because you're in the city. And I'm like, and he's got this accent. It's like the cutest thing ever. So, you know, we kind of kept in touch, whatever. I did the story, da-da-da-da-da. So he ends up in Ohio doing Salvation Army there a couple years. And then I just recently got a phone call from him. And he is now up, not up, it's like upstate, but it's not way upstate. It's kind of lower Hudson Valley-ish at the um Salvation Army up there. So he called me because he wanted to pitch a story for, you know, the news locally or even my podcast. Uh it it we're trying to figure that all out. In the midst of all of this, um, I was telling him that, you know, there's a cost to this podcast. That is a runway of money I have, and it's just there, it's just pricey and all that stuff. So at the end of this call, he says to me, Can we pray together? Do you mind if I pray? And I was like, Is this Dana? But I said, absolutely. Now, up to this point, Dana and I went for that five-hour long lunch. Yes. And it was very insightful. And we talked a lot about prayer and the power of prayer and God. And it was just, it's, I just love learning this, right? So I thought, oh, wow. And you know, I believe. So um, so he is like, let's pray. So, okay. So he prays and he's like, Lord Jesus Christ, you know, uh, please provide Reagan the financial means to continue this podcast to impact more people than she already is. And I thought about that and I go, oh, because it reminded me of, I don't know if I would say testimony that you were telling me, Dana, that like when you ask God for something, like if you want to ask for money, you're not asking me, like, oh, I want money to buy an outfit. It's more you have to ask for something greater and higher than that. So the way Chaka was praying, he was like, I want more, he was praying to God, provide me more means so Reagan could impact more people. Yes. It's a different way of phrasing it. Yes. That's really cool. I got teary because how could you not? I felt it. So I get off the phone with him.

Chaka's awesome. And I of course still talk about Dana because I'm like, I have this friend Dana.

So I get off the phone and I'm thinking to myself, I've got to tell Dana this, right? And um, we already had this podcast planned. And uh I uh at that day, it was like last week, I said, you know, I I set aside time to reach out to, you know, potential sponsors for this podcast because that's kind of the one thing you have to do.

And can I just also add here that this is expensive? You know, just to give a little bit of context. Yes, it is. You know, doing a podcast, it's a it is an investment.

Yes, and you have made the decision to invest in yourself in this project, and it costs money to do it. So this is a it's a big deal. But I just wanted to say that because you know, as he prayed for you, I think that was such an important part because we we need the resources to keep this going. Right.

And I and I know there are episodes that do impact people and it they do speak to people. I hear from my viewers and my listeners. So I, you know, I get off the phone and I say let me reach out to some sponsors. I think prayer is one of the most beautiful things that we can give each other. To pray for someone else, it's such a selfless act. And to pray for God to meet the needs of someone is awesome. I love that. I love that.

And of all things, he he could have prayed at that point for anything. He could have prayed at like, were we talking deeply about finances at that point? No. We, I mean, I had mentioned, like, you know, I I have to do this, it does cost money to do this, but we were talking about a many other things. And of all things, he picked up on that. Hmm. Interesting.

I could go, listen, when it comes to God and the way God answers prayers, I could go on for days, but I'm gonna tell you one quick story.

I um so I am a New Yorker who does not know how to drive a stick shift, just for context. But I do have a license and I can drive decent. That's big. Okay. Okay, because New Yorkers, not usually big drivers, especially if you grew up in Manhattan, you know what I mean? But that's the story for Breeside. Uh, that's where I grew up. That's a story for another day, but I do have a driver's license. I just, I had never, because I grew up in the city, I had never owned a car. And I know there's somebody watching this that's gonna say that sounds crazy, but we take the train.

Oh, you have like every you don't, and why would you want to drive with all the traffic? You don't want to drive in the.

SPEAKER_02 37:43

I don't drive around and I have a car. No. No, we we we are public transportation city. So I never had a car. Long story short, I had moved to LA. I was living there for several years without a car, which I know is crazy. Right. But I was primarily working from home, so it just made sense for the season to not have a car for a while. Right. And then I started feeling like I I need one. You know, it would be kind of being the back of my head, like, all right, the time's probably coming where I'm gonna have to figure out how to get how to get a car. Now, this time there's lots of different expenses happening. Um, you're, you know, you know, there's bills to be paid. I'm an entrepreneur, you're trying to make smart decisions. And so I just do it, I was there was no money for a car in the budget.

Yeah.

And I remember going to church one day, and I'm in the restroom washing my hands, and I heard the Lord say, It's time for a car. I've never told you this story, I don't think.

SPEAKER_01 38:50

No.

SPEAKER_02 38:51

And I said to myself, hmm, okay. I was I said, Lord, well, Lord, you know the budget right now, and so you know it's not in the budget right now, but I said, um, I believe in you, I have faith in you, and if you're saying it's time for a car, then I believe you'll make a way in Jesus' name, amen. It was one of the shortest prayers I've ever prayed in my life. That was the prayer. I walked outside and the church was having a little uh gathering for the kids and the youth, so there was like a little carnival thing going on. I meet up with my friend Val once again, and we're talking, we're talking, and she looks at me and she goes, You have a car. Let me be very clear. When I was washing my hands, I was alone. When I prayed, it was in my head, nobody was with me. She wasn't a part of this conversation at all that had just happened 10 minutes prior. She goes, You have a car, and she says it just like that. And in my spirit, I like, what? I didn't know what she was talking about. I had no idea. Right. And I said, What are you talking about? But once again, the same way my friend said, Did your womb just sleep? It was the same thing. Same way where the person is talking, but you know it's not the person talking. Oh, even her voice sounded a little different, right? It was just like this, you have a car. Shh. And this is a friend who loves to give context, right? She loves to give a background story. And in this moment, she didn't. She just said, You have a car. So I, what do you mean? Well, she had just ran into our friend Renette, our friend Wynnette. Shout out to Wynnette. And um, we I love her so very much. But she had ran into Wynnette, and Wynnette said she was getting herself a fancy car for her birthday, but she had this perfectly lovely car, and it was just on her heart to ask, does Dana want it? What? Yes. And I said, Val, are you sure that she wasn't asking if I want to buy it? And she said, No, no, she wants to give it to you. Once again, this was the same day, ten minutes after praying that prayer, which by the way, I realized that when I prayed the prayer, it had already been answered. I thought in that moment that God was prompting me to pray for a car. But when he said it's time for a car, he was telling me that it's it was done. Oh chills. And this beautiful woman of God who I look up to and admire, you know, who could have done anything with this car, she could have sold it. It was a good car in good condition. She just gave it to me. And it was beyond what I would have gotten for myself. The Bible says, by the way, that God will do exceedingly abundantly above all you could ask, think, or imagine. But um Ephesians 3.20. But uh, I just I was shocked. I was shocked. And because of that, I was blessed with this car, which that I got to have in LA and get to church on my own and get where I needed to go without having to pen depend on folks for a ride. And it was just a huge blessing. So I was so grateful to her. And every time I would thank her and say, Thank you so much, she's like, glory to God, like that was the Lord. So just because we're on this topic of God answering prayers, He really is faithful, you know.

And I think it's important for this example to be given in the one that I gave too, because if somebody's listening and they feel like they're in the depth of despair, and it's is it the way you ask or the intention? What's the uh here we go, here we go. What's the insight of how to properly, is there a way to properly pray? The I is there a yes, yes.

So I want to say this. I do want to say this. I believe that Jesus is God, and it is important for me to give the context that he's not a genie. And I say that because I do believe, and we talk about this on the first episode of Minds of Renewal, check it out.

But um It's linked, don't you worry.

You know, but that there is this idea culturally, even in America, that, you know, God is this genie who's just here to grant our wishes, right? And that's not the reality of what it is. There's a distinction, which is that he is faithful, he loves us, the Bible says he wants to give us good gifts. You know, that he he has plans to prosper us and not to harm us. The Lord wants good things for us. But what he wants most is for us to love him and abide in him, meaning. Have relationship with him. And he wants us to have this close connection with him so that when we pray, we're actually praying things that he wants for us. So he he tells us in John chapter 15, Abide in me and I in you remain. He's saying, Stay with me, and that's how you bear fruit. Um another is Matthew 6:33, seek first the kingdom of God and all his righteousness, and all these other things will be added to you. So he's like, Seek me first, not the stuff, not the money, not the fame, not the riches. Seek me, and then I will prosper you for my purposes. I'm gonna bless you so that you can be a blessing to others.

Yeah. So I think hopefully that answers your question. Yeah, it does. It does. It does.

It's not don't bl ask for the things you have to first believe, and then it opens up the gateway to be you'll you'll know better to ask, how to ask.

How to ask. Yes, and he and the things that we're praying for will be aligned in alignment for even a greater purpose. Right. So even something like praying for a car and getting it, that might seem like a material thing or a but he'll use even those blessings, even like you mentioned an outfit. There's nothing wrong. If you want a new outfit, the Lord is faithful and you can ask him anything.

He genuinely cares about our prayer. So it's not that there's anything that is too small or silly to ask for. And so it's okay to ask. And he's not a genie. He's not a genie. And so in your prayer, like you mentioned, there may be someone who's in despair. Pray for your heart first. Pray that he would give you a new heart, which is something that uh David says, create in me a clean heart, renew a right spirit within me, he says in the Psalms. Because he understood that God wants to improve us, he wants to purify us, he wants to use us for his glory. And so it's like if we ask for that first, God help me to be in close relationship with you. He's like, All these other things are gonna come. All these other things are gonna be added, but I guess I'm the gift. God is like, I'm the best gift you could ever have. There's no car, there's no amount of money or millions that's better than me. He's like, I'm the gift. And I believe that when Jesus died on the cross and made that sacrifice for us, it was the ultimate gift. And it's free. He doesn't want anything in return. He didn't do it so that we could do for him. It's not like that. It's not a transactional. God's love for us is not transactional. It's not he's gonna bless us because we did this or he's gonna bless us because we did everything right. It's not like that. He just loves us unconditionally, agape love, which means there's nothing we can do for him to love us. He just loves us.

I just I had I had I Thank you very much. Continue that you did, you know, you put 20 strong ears into TV news and you have to give yourself more credit and grace than you are already. My oh my girl, in another year, you're gonna really find your voice even more. You're gonna not be afraid to say certain things. You're gonna be able to really just lean into who you are. It's gonna be tough because we're taught to be buttoned up and you have to say a certain thing and not have opinions, and but now you're gonna be able to actually step more into your truth. And you're okay that you stumbled 9,000 times, but believe it or not, you're actually gonna get through a podcast without having to edit anything out.

Then during the pandemic, I decided to get a little uh trippy and tricky with my with my Instagram, and I somehow did a freeze frame of George Clooney in that movie One Fine Day with Michelle Pfeiffer. I love them both in that movie. It's one of my favorite movies ever, ever. It's like in New York and it's a whole now, and when I walk in through areas that they were in in New York, I'm like, oh my God. Anyway, so I I um I had a couple glasses of wine, or as you would say, the blood of Christ, and I got really uh inspired to create these images of George Clooney looking at me and me getting George.

But anyway, there's this scene where Rosemary Clooney is with, I don't remember the other woman, and they do this um song Sisters. And it's in and they have this beautiful, like flowy thing, these like outfits and these feathers, and it's like sisters, sisters, they were never such devoted sisters, never had to have a chaperone, no sir. I'm here to keep my eye on her, caring, sharing every little thing that we are wearing. When a certain gentleman arrives from Rome, she'll wear the dress and I'll stay home. Oh, I mean, I can keep one. Is Broadway gonna call because I don't have I I think that's why I went to broadcasting because I keep putting She has some traps. But thank you. But in this movie, then the two girls had to leave because they were trying I don't know, they had to go up somewhere and I don't I don't know where they had to go, but then Bing Crosby and um oh my gosh, what the heck is his name? Is it Gene Kelly and Bing Crosby? Anyway, so they they both then had a stand-in for the two women and they dressed in dragon. Oh wow and everybody loved it. It was really funny. I never saw it. So anyway. Never saw. You have now. Maybe this Christmas, I'll have you over and you can watch White Christmas with me and then you'll see.

I'm not doing the prayer because I don't know how I just I know, like, bless us our father, these thy gifts we're about to receive from thy listen. I only know that one. That's a good one. Our father prayer. Okay, I would love to pray. Let's do it. Okay, here we go. Yeah, yeah. Uh, Lord, thank you for this opportunity, this beautiful day that you've made, this beautiful season uh that you've ordained. Lord, I'm thankful for Reagan. I'm thankful for Unscripted Turbulence, this podcast. Lord, I just have to give you all the glory because you're the one that connected us in the elevator that day and delivered a word. And you've been with Reagan this whole process of this podcast. I believe that you've had your hand on her and continue to have your hand on her. So I just want to stand in agreement to the pr with the prayers that have already been prayed, that you would bless her abundantly, that you would meet all of her needs, Father God. And anything that she may be praying even privately, uh, that you would hear those prayers, Lord, and you would answer them. I also just want to pray for the listeners of Unscripted Turbulence. This podcast is about courage and really taking leaps of faith. Maybe people are in transitions or maybe they feel stuck. Reagan mentioned there could be people that are just going through a hard season of life and you're a compassionate God, you're an understanding God, there's nothing that you haven't seen, there's nothing that's hidden from you, Lord. So I just ask that you would touch their hearts, that you would comfort them, that you would bless them, Lord. If there's anyone dealing with depression or anxiety, Father God, I pray that you would renew their minds. I pray that you would touch them and let them know uh that you love them and that there's nothing that they could do for you to stop loving them. There's nothing that uh there's no sin, there's no deed that could make you stop loving them. Nobody's too far gone for you. Maybe there's somebody who thinks that they've lived a life that because it's not pleasing to you, that they could never be in relationship with you. But we know that's not true, Lord God. We know that because of what your son Jesus did on the cross, for God, you so loved the world, you gave your only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. So, Lord, I just pray that this prayer penetrates hearts and transforms minds and changes lives. Once again, just continue to bless unscripted turbulence and may your perfect will be done. I pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
